A big part of this episode was character building since we get to see how each character thinks. We start to see a calculative side of Meng Jue and also how Liu Fu Ling stays true to his values (and still remembers his promise to Yun Ge). Both male leads also get time with Yun Ge. I wonder who everyone is rooting for after this episode.
Episode 7
Liu Fu Ling (I’ll refer to him as this even though others may
not know his name yet) says that he will take the medicine and use it at home.
Ah Fu asks if Liu Fu Ling will visit again and Yun Ge tells Ah Fu that someone
(Ling Gege) once told her that parting is the start of being reunited. Their
separation is needed in order to meet again.
Liu Fu Ling hears this and asks
where she had heard this and Yun Ge says that a special friend told her. He was
just about to ask who her special friend is when Ah Fu interrupts—how frustrating!
Before he leaves Liu Fu Ling asks if she has been West of the borders (where he
met Yun Ge) and whether her real name is Bai He. Yun Ge becomes wary so she asks
why he is asking defensively. In the end, they only agreed to become friends
before he left.
Meng Jue is on another date with Huo Cheng Jun. Yun Ge runs
into Xu Ping Jun as she collects ingredients to help with Liu Bing Yi’s
appetite. Yun Ge tells Xu Ping Jun her story meeting and helping a guy with his
rashes and earning the name as a doctor. In reality, Yun Ge helped her mom with
rashes when she was young so she knew which herbs to pick.
When Xu Ping Jun teases Yun Ge about Meng Jue, they happen
to catch a handkerchief that floated from the direction where they saw someone
who looks like Meng. They don’t realize that they are seeing Meng Jue on a date
with Huo Cheng Jun. Yun Ge admits that she is upset with Meng Jue because she
hasn’t seen Meng Jue in a while.
Xu Ping Jun is upset and starts undressing in front of him. She cries and says that her mom is forcing her to get married and she doesn’t know what to do because she wants to be with Liu Bing Yi. Yun Ge shows up outside and hears this, there seems to be lots of scenes where people just happen to hear crucial conversations…
In the palace Liu Fu Ling reminisces about his encounter
with the adult Yun Ge while using the medicine on his face. He decides that he wants to visit Bai He (Yun
Ge) at the mountain lodge again.
Yun Ge walks around worried about Xu Ping Jun’s marriage
dilemma when she spots Meng Jue and follows him. Unknowingly she walks into a
prostitution house and gets mistaken for a prostitute by the substitute house
mom since the normal one happened to be ill.
Later when they are alone, Meng Jue explains that he thought
she was angry at him and sent letters daily. They went to the hotel she and Meng Jue stayed at and the greeter said they couldn’t locate her to deliver the letters.
Yun Ge reads them out loud to him on a balcony. Turns out, they were all cheesy poems. Meng Jue says that he is happy that she cares about him and is curious about him.
He gives her a jeweled knife so she can protect herself in
the future. She doesn’t accept and he asks if it is because of Liu Bing Yi. Yun
Ge explains how she met Ling Gege a long time ago and how she doesn’t think
that she should accept Meng Jue’s gift.
Meng Jue asks why Yun Ge doesn’t take the
opportunity to strike as Xu Ping Jun’s parents are currently forcing her to
marry someone else. Yun Ge asks Meng Jue to help because she wants them to be
happy. Meng Jue agrees and says Yun Ge has to go with him somewhere if he helps.
When Yun Ge returns to the house she is staing at she sees Liu Bing Yi drinking, angry about
how he is not good enough for Xu Ping Jun. Liu Bing Yi hallucinates and sees
her as Xu Ping Jun and apologizes for hurting her. Yun Ge thinks that he is
recognizing her and apologizes about how he has ‘remembered her all these
years’. Yun Ge is moved by this until he says Ping Jun’s name at the very end
and she realizes that he still has not remembered her.
Yun Ge visits Xu Ping Jun and hears her parents scold her
for not wanting to marry into wealth. She tries to comfort Xu Ping Jun and as
this happened Xu Ping Jun’s aunt runs in saying that the future husband prospect
drowned in the pond and everyone in town is saying that he is unlucky.
Yun Ge asks Meng Jue if he killed Xu Ping Jun’s fiancĂ© and
Meng Jue recalls that Xu Ping Jun also asked him to help. His responds to Yun
Ge with questions including “You think this was me?” and “Even if I said no
would you believe me?” which really makes him guilty but Yun Ge doesn’t seem to
see through this. Yun Ge tries to back out of her agreement to go see someone
with Meng Jue and Meng Jue blackmails her.
Meng Jue’s acquaintance (Liu He who
is also a half-brother of the emperor)’s deaf concubine meets Yun Ge at the
door to tell her that Meng Jue is a very prideful person but he never lies.
Yun Ge walks around and tries to reason things out about how
she is also at fault because she asked Meng Jue. Also, even if Meng Jue’s
actions were wrong it still achieved the results that she wanted and Xu Ping
Jun is happy.
Yun Ge visits the old grandma and Liu Fu Ling is there
waiting for her. She makes them noodle soup and asks him why he always has a
lot on her mind. He asks if she is really Ah Fu’s biological sister and Yun Ge
asks a rhetorical question “Do we not look alike?” She then asks for his name
and he says his name is Liu (pause) Chang Feng. They both talk about the
importance of promises hinting at their childhood promises vaguely though
neither know that they are both talking about each other.
After Liu Fu Ling gets back to the palace he is angry with
himself because he had already promised to be with Yun Ge when they were
children, how could he like Bai He?
Comments
Now that adult Ling Gege has interacted with Yun Ge, Meng
Jue seems not as great in comparison. Parts of this drama are truly frustrating
when Yun Ge and Liu Fu Ling avoid discovering each other. Why is Yun Ge so open
with everyone but cautious with him? On the other hand, they cant figure it out
just yet because there needs to be more angst since this is a drama after all.
I’ve read some comments on forums that people don’t love
this drama either because it is changed from the book (which it is, thanks to
SARFT) or because of the acting. Personally I like this one a lot better than
many other novel adaptations mainly because I didnt have high expectations after the first two episodes.
Hey, thanks for the recaps/summary! I am watching Song in the Clouds raw online - but as I need english subtitles, I've been just following the action from having read the (translated) novel it was based on. I've found your little tidbits of information very helpful - for example, I didn't realize the papers they were reading on the roof were poems. I hope you continue - I appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome Ellen! I'll try my best to continue with a focus on the most interesting scenes :)
