Though each episode has a lot of scenes, I don’t really mind that
much anymore. This episode in particular develops the mystery and delves into
the crime-solving that we’ve been waiting for.
Episode 3
Similar to the book, Jian Yao attempts to convince Bo Jin
Yan to give his debrief on their way to back from their investigation. Arrogant
Bo Jin Yan did not want to since it was below him so she tells the police that
Bo Jin Yan is still preparing.
Bo Jin Yan keeps trying to profile Jian Yao. She tries to
convince him to be more patient when working with the police because they have
good intent and work hard to protect the people. Bo Jin Yan explains that it is
not their position as the police that he looks down upon, but their
intelligence. Intelligence is not related to their position.
When giving the profile Bo Jin Yan describes the criminal as
a clever unsub who is good at communication. The unsub also has a specific type
of victim. His home is the crime scene within the marked map that Bo Jin Yan
hands out. He then explains his reasoning. Bo Jin Yan is almost certain that
the children are already dead because 90% of those missing for over two weeks
are no longer alive.
Xun Ran asks why they must wait till they find the bodies to
give a more complete profile. Jin Yan replies that the unsub’s internal desires
are reflected in the victim’s bodies.
Later that night Xun Ran is present when Jian Yao receives a
call from Jin Yan to “come.” Though Jian Yao thinks that it’s ridiculous to go
at command, Xun Ran convinces her to go. When they get there, Bo Jin Yan is
staring at a board seemingly not aware of his surroundings.
Jian Yao explains to Xun Ran that Bo Jin Yan can hear
everything. They notice a pattern that all the kids were taken on the 3rd
even though the reported times are sometimes days off from when they disappeared.
All taken were also adolescent boys which is not normal for an abduction ring.
Bo Jin Yan says that he wants all of Jian Yao’s time and tells
her that she cannot go home in case they need to go in the middle of the night.
What a coincidence, they find a corpse in the woods that
night while Jian Yao is sleeping on the couch. When she goes to wake up Bo Jin
Yan, like in the book, he mistakes her for Chen Mo when he says “Chen Mo, go
sleep”. She thinks that Chen Mo is his girlfriend and Bo Jin Yan wakes up.
Jian Yao is downcast because she had hope when the bodies
were missing since there was still a possibility that the children were
abducted only and not killed. Bo Jin Yan says that he does not make mistakes –
how arrogant!
Once again, she asks why he wants her to be his assistant
because he is brilliant. He replies that she’s overthinking it. He found her
because she was not annoying. And pretty good looking.
Fu Zi Yu is boxing (!?) when Bo Jin Yan calls him. This time
Bo Jin Yan does not want fish.
When Zi Yu shows up and sees Jian Yao, he introduces Jian
Yao to Chen Mo, Bo Jin Yan’s pet tortoise. Apparently the little guy never
listens! Unlike in the novel since they could not find a big enough tortoise
(budget and personality according to the author’s Weibo), Chen Mo is now only Bo Jin Yan’s pet
and not a tortoise that has been passed down from his mom.
Bo Jin Yan uses a simulation to model how the unsub kills
the kids and presents this to the police.
They come to the conclusion that they
unsub has a “killing machine”. One of the victim’s dad (the one who stormed Bo
Jin Yan’s house) begs Jian Yao to help him apologize to Bo Jin Yan to help his
son since his body has not yet been found and there is still hope.
The viewer sees that someone is taking pictures of people visiting
Bo Jin Yan. Bo Jin Yan spends time to replicate the killing machine. Jin Yan
says that there is a lot of specialized equipment needed to build the machine
and Xun Ran takes this as his time to go and search these regulated goods.
And another corpse was found near the original victim in the
forest.
Similar to the conclusion of the previous episodes, we see
the bad guy burying things in the forest, creepy creepy.
Comments
Overall, I liked this episode. This drama is a very good adaptation of the book in terms of
content. I’m not sure why but I still like the book a lot more because I felt
more connected to the characters when reading. Other than that, this seems to
be a great drama to watch in the month of October. Happy Halloween!
