In this episode we get to see more of Meng Jue's actions and how he manipulates others to gain power. Though it isn't really what we may want in a male lead, I can't help but be impressed by how cunning and strategic he is. He's been hurt a lot all throughout his life but now that he has Yun Ge, maybe he'll have some real feelings.
Episode 8 Recap
Liu Fu Ling tells the eunuch to make a kite (for Ah Fu). The queen comes and overhears him ordering the kite. She asked if the kite was for her because he said that he would take her kite flying each month. He agrees that the hawk kite is for her and later orders eunuch to make two kites.
Meng Jue asks Yun Ge to put on a hairpin during the errand she agreed to go on with Meng Jue. Yun Ge gets trapped in a hunter’s trap while escaping from Meng Jue and the hunter reacts when seeing her hairpin. He happens to be Meng Jue’s adopted father.
The old man says that Yun Ge looks like his old friend and
asks about Yun Ge’s parents. Yun Ge answers that she is not supposed to talk
about them but they don’t live in the populated areas. The old man asks her
about her mom’s health and Yun Ge answers that she is well other than her
allergies to peanuts. Meng Jue’s adopted father nods in approval and also
comments that the hairpin also suits Yun Ge.
Yun Ge asks why Meng Jue’s adoptive father asked Meng Jue to
take care of her—guess she didn’t get the hint when he talked about her mother
with such fondness. Yun Ge asks why Meng Jue and his father are not close and
Meng Jue answers that he hates his biological father so it is difficult to get
close to a father figure so there is no way to face his adoptive father burden
free. Yun Ge holds his hands to comfort him and is that a look of guilt I see
in Meng Jue’s eyes?
Liu Bing Yi says that he is too tired and not feeling well so he will not attend the opening of Meng Jue’s new establishment. Huo Cheng Jun intercepts Meng Jue as he was about to go over to Yun Ge and friends to introduce him to her father.
A princess comes to visit and Meng Jue introduces Yun Ge as
Zhu Gong Zi (Ya Chu) which is the name Yun Ge goes by as chef. The princess
invites Yun Ge to cook for a special event she will be holding.
Finally visiting Yun Ge, Meng Jue apologizes and teases Yun Ge for being jealous. Yun Ge says that she just doesn’t like people who value beauties over friends. Yun Ge asks him to help her taste the dishes when he asks about the princess’s banquet.
Meng Jue grudgingly agrees while Yun Ge rushes to the
kitchen and adds lots of salt, vinegar, and pepper to all the dishes because he
said she was jealous that he told Huo Cheng Jun that she was his sister (not female
friend).
When Meng Jue tastes the dishes he praises her cooking
unendingly while she is confused to the point she tastes the food herself check
after he leaves. She thinks to herself that Meng Jue must be pretending for her
benefit so she isn’t stressed.
In the kitchen, Yun Ge thinks of all the emotions she went through longing for Ling Gege and puts a riddle into each dish thinking that Ling Gege will never be able to understand. Ironically, her Ling Gege tastes all of these dishes. Since they understand each other, Liu Fu Ling gets each riddle right.
As he tastes the third dish, he is thrown into a flashback……
Comments
It’s interesting to note that during the banquet Meng Jue
actually knows that the emperor is Ling Gege …
Question, any strong opinions on continuing recaps? I might
just summarize my favorite scenes until things get exciting more exciting because the
next few episodes look mediocre – or I might combine episodes to make things more
interesting. To be honest, I don’t love Meng Jue’s character (the actor is
great) overall and am not sure I want to spend too much time on this till Ling
Gege takes center stage.
As a non-Chinese speaker who is watching Song in the Clouds unsubbed (although I have read the translated book and, so far, I'm understanding the action), I loved reading your recaps and I hope you keep them up. I didn't realize from the action that Meng Jue knew that she was cooking for Ling gege. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Ellen, you're very welcome. Wow, that's impressive that you are watching without subs. Yeah, he must have known because he wouldn't have a reason to actively prevent Yun Ge from meeting Liu Fu Ling! I do plan to continue, thanks for your support :)
DeleteI love reading your recaps too! So frustrating to try find any subbing on YT, thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Kalli, glad I can help :) Not sure what is up with the subbing for this drama... it's also frustrating how some drama sub sites have recently been restricted from North America
