This episode is hopefully the end of all of Yun Ge's moping over the fake Ling Gege. There have been some chatter that Du Chun is not a good fit (due to looks) for the character Meng Jue. I think his looks are similar to other male leads in Asian dramas. I agree that he does wear some hideous outfits. But based on looks alone, I think he looks better than Lu Yi as Ling Gege. And he isn't wearing nearly as much makeup as Chen Xiao as Liu Bing Yi. I only like Lu Yi best because of his character.
Episode 9
It’s kind of weird how one can convey feelings from dishes, but I guess this was also in the book so it makes sense that they would put this in the drama. Yun Ge wants to personally deliver the dishes because this esteemed guest was able to guess her riddles but was stopped by Meng Jue who throws a rock at Yun Ge’s leg so she is “sore” (worst excuse ever) and cannot come out to greet the guest. Meng Jue is content that Yun Ge will stay in the kitchen.
When the princess sees that the emperor likes the dishes so much, she offers to keep the chef in the palace. As she does this, Meng Jue spills his wine and then offers to play on the Gu Zheng. The emperor starts accompanying on the flute and Yun Ge thinks that the flute song sounds familiar so she follows the music, until she is stopped by the princess’ guard. Eunuch also recommends the chef to stay but the emperor says that the chef cannot thrive confined in the palace so he wants to award the chef instead.
Fishing for compliments, Yun Ge gets lots of compliments on
her cooking from Meng Jue. When Meng Jue says that Yun Ge should not cook for
royalty to avoid trouble, Yun Ge says she only wants to cook for friends and
loved ones. Meng Jue mentions that it does feel quite warm when she cooks for
him… but is interrupted by Huo Cheng Jun inviting Meng Jue to her house. He, of
course, agrees to visit.
Xu Ping Jun says that since her fiancé drowned, everyone says she is bad luck so she hints that Bing Yi should ask for her hand.
Xu Ping Jun asks Meng Jue to help her with her marriage with
Bing Yi. Meng Jue teases and asks what he will get in return. Xu Ping Jun says
that she will say good things about him in front of Yun Ge but Meng Jue says
that he still cannot help and refers her to Zhang He. Liu Bing Yi sees their interaction and shows up at Meng
Jue’s establishment.
In the palace the emperor has no appetite. The eunuch
mentions that he has no interests, in particular with no interest in women. The
emperor says that he does have a person that he likes and waits to meet that
person again
Meanwhile, Yun Ge thinks about Ling Gege on a tree (guess she likes thinking while in high places). She thinks about how she had almost forgotten until she heard the flute song (that Ling Gege played). She then hears Liu Bing Yi talking to a friend and goes to listen in on their conversation.
This man turns out to be a friend of his parents (Uncle Zhang, who is the person Meng Jue referred Xu Ping Jun to….) and talks about how he is the last person in his bloodline and urges him to marry Xu Ping Jun. Liu Bing Yi seems affected and agrees to accept Zhang He’s help.
Yun Ge offers to drink again with Liu Bing Yi who talks about ‘not forgetting’ and Yun Ge once again probes and he replies that he cannot forget all the people that died in front of him. Yun Ge assumes that he wants to forget everything because his life was so terrible and that is why he had forgotten her. And here Meng Jue steps in when seeing Yun Ge drunk and cuddly with Liu Bing Yi. Meng Jue gives Liu Bing Yi the death glare, so maybe he actually likes Yun Ge?
The next morning Yun wakes up and sees Meng Jue lying on the floor next to her bed and asks why he is there and where her outer garbs are. He flirtingly says “Who do you think carried you home, helped you undress, and put you on the bed?” Afterwards he admits that a maid helped her change and only stayed by her to make sure she didn’t die (riiighhhht, I believe you).
Chen Xiao has so much makeup on in all scenes... |
And they are married. Yun Ge sulks in her room, Meng Jue stares at Yun Ge which is nothing new. Later that night Yun Ge repeats to herself that Ling Gege is not for her and is now married and that she will move on – Meng Jue hears all of this, of course.
Yun Ge and Xu Ping Jun are invited to cook for the emperor again, but this time, at a royal countryside home. We see the emperor walking around and Yun Ge going into the forest to collect wild vegetables. Yun Ge says since royalty get to eat a lot of cultivated vegetables, some wild varieties will be a good change (normally only commoners eat ‘wild vegetables’).
Yun Ge finds a carnation and falls in the process of picking it but is caught by Liu Chang Feng (aka emperor aka Ling Gage, so many personas).
She asks if he is a relative of royalty and he doesn’t
really answer. He asks if she is looking for medicine in the mountains and she
also avoids answering. Their communication is absolutely terrible… They decide
to meet the next day. All night he looks at the carnation flower that helped
them meet.
This scene looked rather silly. |
This is a pretty good picture of Liu He, at least I think so. |
Fortunately Liu He comes to the rescue followed by Meng Jue and Huo Cheng Jun. Meng Jue saves Huo Cheng Jun from a rabid dog as well while knocking over Yun Ge in the process. – wonder if this is foreshadowing. Yun Ge looks jealous.
Liu He offers to have his two female servants go help Yun Ge with her injuries but Meng Jue tells him to just give them some incense first.
That night, Yun Ge remembered that she forgot to go meet Liu
Chang Jiang. As she chatters with Xu Ping Jun, a smokey substance comes in and
they both pass out – which leaves us wondering is this the incense Meng Jue
ordered or something else…
Comments
I realized that the eunuch around Liu Fu Ling may be Yu An
from the novel. Was he a eunuch? I don’t remember. Anyways, I’ll call him that
from now on. I don’t think his name was mentioned that much, or at least I
didn’t pay much attention to him because he looks weird (out of place, no
judgment on style) with is bleached hair and crazy eyebrows.
Thanks for your kind comments! I will definitely continue to recap for now. I may summarize boring episodes or combine boring scenes. Looking at stills from the new episodes that just aired this week, I’m excited to recap
them because they look really good from the stills :)
Thanks! I am having a hard time remembering Mr. Crazyeyebrows from the novel as well. I wonder if they combined some characters into a composite bodyguard.
ReplyDeleteMaybe! I was kind of traumatized by the novel my first read-through until I read Once Promised by the same author and that made Song in the Clouds seem like a walk in the park. Now I just reallyyyy want the third novel in the series to be written and published.
